The Fundamental Truth About Tanning

Moderate tanning, for individuals who can develop a tan, is the smartest way to maximize the potential benefits of sun exposure while minimizing the potential risks associated with either too much or too little sunlight.

This position is founded on the following tenets:

  • The professional indoor tanning industry promotes and teaches what we refer to as The Golden Rule of Smart Tanning: Don't ever sunburn.

  • The indoor tanning industry has been more effective at teaching sunburn prevention than those who promote complete sun avoidance. Non-tanners sunburn more often than people who tan indoors.

  • An estimated 30 million North Americans patronize indoor tanning facilities at some point during the year. Every year, millions of indoor tanners successfully develop "base tans" before embarking on sunny vacations - tans that, combined with the proper use of sunscreen outdoors, help them prevent sunburn.

  • Public debate on this issue has completely lost the perspective that there are known physiological and psychological benefits associated with sunlight, that there are many other potential benefits that need further research, that the risks are manageable for anyone who has the ability to develop a tan and that, for many people, the benefits of sun exposure outweigh the risks associated with overexposure.

  • A tan is the body's natural protection against sunburn. Your skin is designed to tan as a natural body function, and the body is designed to repair sun damage as a natural process.

  • The professional indoor tanning salon industry is part of the solution in the ongoing battle against sunburn and in teaching people how to identify a proper and practical life-long skin care regimen.

Always tan with clean skin. When skin is clean you are less likely to have any kind of reaction to the UV light, that can be caused by perfume, makeup or body creams.
Never ever tan with lotions or moisturizer containing mineral oil. Stay away from moisturizers with Hydrochloride in them, it will bleach out your skin. Always remove all jewelry when tanning. If you are tanning with swimsuits on (men or women) please make sure they don't have buttons or snaps on them. These items will scratch acrylics.
Always use a great salon sold tanning lotions when tanning and after showers a salon sold moisturizer. The more moist your skin, the longer you will keep your tan.
Exfoliating at least once a month with good salt scrub helps when tanning.

Please inform our staff if you are on medication or have had a change in your diet, we can help prevent unnecessary burning. Certain medications may cause sensitivity to UV light. Even though the summer is gone, if you are going to be outside during daylight hours, you should lather on some sunscreen. Smart Tan Motto "never sunburn".

Some reasoning for the 24-hour rule:
1- To help minimizing the risk of burning
2- Skin naturally needs a little down time to process the light it has received.
3- Exposure schedules require guidelines of time between next session

We are here to prevent sunburn and to ensure you get the best tan you can get in a controlled environment.

Always wear your goggles.

Some reasoning for wearing your goggles.

1- Eyewear will protect your eyes from potentially harmful ultraviolet light.
2- UV damage is cumulative
3- The short term health risk is corneal burns, which are sunburns on the surface of the eye. A corneal burn shows up within a few hours of exposure and is characterized by increased sensitivity, a burning sensation and excessive tearing. The effects are apparently temporary and usually disappear within a day or so.
4- The long term health risks include brunescent cataracts, which are a clouding or pigmentation of the lens within the eye. They are slow to develop, usually occurring over a matter of years, but they are permanent. The clouding affects night vision and also can  alter perception of color. Cataract surgery is the only known cure.

So, please wear your goggles at all times while tanning and when outside wear protective sunglasses.
